Midem / SXSW

It's already March and we've kicked off the year with a bang! We just got back from MIDEM in Cannes, France and the trip was amazing. Not to mention the two additional weeks I spent traveling Europe with my Pops! Never before have I been to a conference so focused on networking.

It was refreshing to see everyone so open to setting up meetings and talking about how we can work together. This was our first step into the international world and it was a huge success. We've already made connections with Independent Label Associations in the UK & Australia and had countless meetings with overseas labels, managers & companies! Many thanks to Rich, Jim & Jennifer for hosting an amazing A2IM Pavilion and giving us a killer spot to schedule all of our meetings!

After having so many structured and productive meetings at MIDEM, it's time to follow it up with the craziness of SXSW. Austin is definitely a whole different animal from MIDEM. The calm, waterfront pavilion will be replaced by music, barbecue & beer filled tents, but that's just fine with me! I'll be heading down on Wednesday, March 16th & will be there til Sunday. Let me know if you'd like set up a time to meet up or if you're putting on any parties or showcases. I'd love to attend them. See you in Austin!

The Death Of The Music Industry

As you likely saw the music industry made the Chart Of The Day on businessinsider.com a few weeks ago. Or should I say the "Death Of The Music Industry" did. At first glance it appears to be an incredibly bleak visual representation of where we are currently at. But, it also puts it in perspective. The life of the Compact Disc ranges from 1985 to current day of course, while the Digital portion doesn't even start until around 2005. Which means we are only 5 years into the format...and have a long way to go before we are truly able to compare apples to apples.

I think Bob Lefsetz said it best..."just because there's presently less money in the sale of recorded music than previously doesn't mean there's not a ton of money to be made in music."
